Your Home Doesn’t Have to Be a Health Hazard

As our homes become more energy efficient, they become more hazardous to our health.

The problem? Allergens and harmful indoor fumes from paint, plastics, carpets, adhesives, and household products stay trapped inside today’s tightly sealed, well-insulated houses.

Although you’re saving money by conserving energy, you’re paying a much greater price with your health. Polluted indoor air can cause respiratory irritation and worsen allergy symptoms for everyone inside.

It’s a risky tradeoff, and one that can be avoided.

The LifeBreath Heat Recovery Ventilator(HRV) makes your home a healthier environment by replacing polluted, stale air with fresh, clean air from outside. The Lifebreath Clean Air Furnace heats your home with maximum efficiency, and provides the additional benefit of heat recovery and a delivery system for air conditioning. You breathe better air indoors and enjoy the financial benefits of an energy efficient home.

The Lifebreath TFP-Air Cleaner cleans the air in your home removing airbourne particles.

Take a few moments to learn about the dangers of poor indoor air quality, and see how LifeBreath’s range of products can improve the health of your home.

Geothermal Rebates

With geothermal systems continuing to grow in popularity, new Government incentives are being brought forward to encourage home owners to make the switch to geothermal heating & cooling.  Incentives can easily add up to more than $10,000, so get familiar with them.  It is still uncertain whether the original loop can be reused with new equipment when replacing existing geothermal units. To find the dealer closest to you, please visit our automated dealer locator.

If the original loop can be certified that it was installed according to CSA C488 standard, then it should be acceptable. The question becomes: How do I certify?  We will keep you up to date as more information is available. Below is a list of the current incentives available.

ecoEnergy Rebate – increased by 25% on March 30, 2009ecoenergy
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is offering a new residential energy efficiency assessment service to owners of single family homes including, detached, semi-detached, and low-rise multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) that are no more than three storeys high.  Under the ecoENERGY Retrofit program, property owners can qualify for federal grants by improving the energy efficiency of their homes, and reducing their home’s impact on the environment. You can get up to $4,375 in rebates (increased from $3,500 on March 30, 2009) for Geothermal. Click here for more info!

2009 Year – Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC)
Only available for the 2009 tax year the federal government is offering a Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC).  Under proposed taxation changes, you can claim a non-refundable tax credit on your 2009 income tax return based on eligible expenditures incurred for work performed or goods acquired after January 27, 2009, and before February 1, 2010, in respect of an eligible dwelling. The HRTC applies to eligible expenditures of more than $1,000, but not more than $10,000, resulting in a maximum credit of $1,350 [($10,000 - $1000) x 15%].  Click here for more info!

Ontario Home Energy Audit and Retrofit Rebate Programshomeenergy
Ontario’s Home energy savings program provides homeowners with up to $150 towards the cost of a home energy audit and up to $10,000 (50 per cent paid by the province and 50 per cent paid by the federal government ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes Program) in combined provincial and federal rebates for retrofits that address energy issues identified in the audit.

To help homeowners save energy, save money and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Ontario government has created the Ontario Home Energy Audit and Retrofit Rebate Programs.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has announced a $150 million rebate program.  This rebate program, under the Home Energy Retrofit Program, gives incentives to Ontarians to “go green” at home through:

Another good reason to use the IQ Drive to heat\cool your Muskoka home or cottage

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

iQ Drive® Humidity Control:
Too Much of a Good Thing?

One of the favorite features of the iQ Drive air conditioner and heat pump is the system’s ability to manage humidity in the home. The homeowner can select a humidity level between 35% and 70%, and the system will work to maintain humidity within 5% of this set point. It can do this because of how the iQ Drive system operates – almost constantly running at low levels. While many systems remove moisture from the evaporator coil by slowing down the blower, the iQ Drive also monitors evaporator temperature so that the coil will never freeze. After dehumidifying for a set time, the blower periodically speeds up again so that air remains uniformly distributed and well-mixed.

While this is a wonderful feature for many homeowners, it’s important to note that the iQ Drive is not a dehumidifier. It can work to maintain this ideal humidity level, but it won’t always be able to meet that level when conditions are less than ideal – like high humidity on a cool day, or extreme humidity in some parts of the country or in some homes (indoor hot tub, anyone?).

So when you’re selling the iQ Drive system to homeowners, please keep in mind that there is a limit to how much dehumidification an air conditioner or heat pump can do. If the homeowner truly has humidity concerns, he or she should consider an additional dehumidifier to make sure the needs are met. For more info on the iQ Drive system, visit www.iqdrive.net/frigidaire.html.

Why should I heat my home or Muskoka cottage with geothermal?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

1. Reduce your energy costs:

Providing you with an unheard of efficiency of up to 400%, the Envision WaterFurnace geothermal system can deliver up to $4 of free earth energy for every $1 of electrical energy used.

2. Heating, cooling and hot water in one unit:

One compact WaterFurnace unit provides heating, central air conditioning and supplemental domestic hot water all in one packaged system.

3. 10-year worry-free warranty:

The 10-year Worry-Free Warranty comes standard with the Envision WaterFurnace unit. This warranty covers the unit and provides you with a worry-free labour allowance. The warranty is with the manufacturer, not the distributor or the installing dealer and regardless of what happens to your dealer, you still have a warranty.

4. Long-lasting technology:

The WaterFurnace reputation for reliability has been earned by using only the highest-quality components, design and workmanship. WaterFurnace has been making geothermal systems for over 20 years.

5. Low-maintenance:

When installed properly, the buried loop will last for generations. And because the WaterFurnace unit is housed indoors, it is protected from the harsh weather conditions, increasing the lifespan of the equipment.

6. Quiet operation:

WaterFurnace systems do not require noisy outdoor units that create unsightly additions to your home’s appearance.

7. Safe operation:

There is no combustion, flames or fumes and no chance of carbon-monoxide poisoning because natural gas, propane and oil are not required to operate a WaterFurnace unit.

8. Reduce your carbon footprint:

Installing a WaterFurnace system can be the environmental equivalent ofplanting 750 trees or removing two cars from the road. No fossil fuel means no harmful emissions or greenhouse gases

9. Save future power plants:

If one in 12 Ontario homes installed a geothermal system, the energy saved would equal the output of three new power plants.

10. Increase the value of your home:

With a high-efficiency rating, the value of your home will go up. ENERGY STAR qualified new homes are approximately 30 per cent more energy efficient than those built to minimum building code standards. The increased efficiency of these homes translates into reduced energy costs for homeowners.

For your new Muskoka Heating and Air Conditioning System: Frigidaire has an entire line of earth-friendly heating and cooling systems called ecoLogic™

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Frigidaire has an entire line of earth-friendly heating and cooling systems called ecoLogic™. These systems combine efficiency with high technology to deliver the ultimate in home comfort and energy savings. To receive the ecoLogic seal, these systems must have efficiency ratings greater than ENERGY STAR, include smart controls and deliver multi- or variable-speed operation.

The goal with the Frigidaire ecoLogic equipment is to help Frigidaire dealers differentiate their product offering from the competition by putting the technological benefits into consumer-speak. Homeowners understand green. They hear the term nearly every day through the media. Homeowners also understand that green products are usually better products. So it is a natural extension that green HVAC would be better than the rest – and that Frigidaire ecoLogic HVAC is better than the competition.

HAVE THE BEST HEATING COOLING SYSTEM IN MUSKOKA

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009
Turn energy efficiency into budget efficiency.

When asked to name the most desired improvement in their home comfort systems, over half of all homeowners cite increased energy efficiency as number one. And that number will only grow as heating and cooling costs grow as well.

According to the Department of Energy, all energy costs are on the rise. Between 2007 and 2008, costs are expected to go up as much as 44 percent for heating oil, 30 percent for propane, 9 percent for natural gas and 1.4 percent for electricity.

You can offset those increases by replacing your outdated, inefficient system with an ecoLogic home comfort system. Consider this:

  • Going from a 10-SEER air conditioner to a 23-SEER ecoLogic unit can save an average of 60 percent on cooling costs.
  • A new 95 AFUE ecoLogic furnace, on average, is 50 percent more efficient than one installed 15 years ago.
  • New dual-fuel options exist where you can lower your natural gas bill, for instance, by heating with electricity when temperatures are mild.

A simple system.

Heating and cooling technology can be confusing. That’s why ecoLogic makes it easy. With just a glance, you can find the most energy-efficient products available.

And energy efficiency is a direct link to product innovation – which means in addition to consuming less energy, you’ll also be experiencing a more comfortable home with even temperatures, improved air flow and reduced noise levels.

HAVE THE BEST HEATING COOLING SYSTEM IN MUSKOKA

More evidence geothermal heating is the best way to heat your Muskoka home and provide the maximum energy savings

Monday, June 8th, 2009

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it will offer nearly $50 million in funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act to accelerate the deployment of geothermal heat pumps (GHPs). Also referred to as ground-source heat pumps, GHPs generally achieve higher efficiencies than air-source heat pumps, because the ground maintains a relatively stable temperature throughout the year, even during heat waves and extreme cold snaps. They can provide space heating and cooling and water heating for residential and commercial buildings. According to the DOE, GHPs can substantially reduce the electricity demand for buildings, providing building owners and residents with lower utility bills and reduced maintenance costs.

Grants for Energy Efficiency Change Again, here a re a few FAQ

Friday, April 10th, 2009

IMPORTANT PROGRAM UPDATES

What are the new grant amounts?

The grant amounts have increased by 25%, but the maximum grant available to a homeowner through the

program is still $5,000 per house per homeowner. While program funding has increased by $300M,

grant payments are always subject to availability of funding and homeowners should be encouraged

to complete their retrofits and have their post-retrofit evaluation as soon as possible. A new grant table is

attached for use and distribution until stock of the new brochure is available. We will advise you as soon

at it becomes available.

What’s the new deadline for a post-retrofit evaluation?

Homeowners have 18 months or until March 31, 2011 (whichever comes first) from the date of their preretrofit

homeowner report to complete their renovations and apply for a grant. Please note that as the

program is ending on March 31, 2011, those participating in the program after October 1, 2009, should be

clearly informed that their deadline for eligibility would be March 31, 2011, rather than 18 months from

the date of their homeowner report.

You must reinforce with homeowners that they do not to wait until the end of the program to book their

post-retrofit evaluation. As we approach the end of the program, there will be an unprecedented demand

for evaluations. Please prepare your clients for this eventuality and encourage them to apply for their

grant or have their appointment booked well before the end of the program.

Which homeowners will be paid according to the new grant table?

Homeowners whose onsite E evaluations occurred before the Minister’s announcement (March 29th and

before) will be paid according to the grant table in effect January 1st, 2008. This grant table does not

include the 25% increase.

Those who have an E evaluation on or after the Minister’s announcement March 30, 2009, will be paid

according to the new grant table which includes the 25% increase.

Can homeowners participate in the program a second time?

Homeowners who have already received a post-retrofit evaluation and/or a grant can re-enter the

program. They will be given an additional 18 months from the date of their first post-retrofit evaluation to

apply for another grant.

NRCan, in cooperation with the provincial partners, will be sending a letter to all homeowners who have

already had an E evaluation to advise them of this program change and opportunity. We will forward you

a copy of this letter once it is available.

What about homeowners whose 18 month deadline to apply for a grant has expired?

Homeowners who missed their opportunity to apply for a grant because their 18 month deadline had

passed, will be given the opportunity to receive a grant for the work they completed. These homeowners

will be sent a letter indicating that they have until September 1, 2009 to perform a post-retrofit

evaluation. Following this evaluation, the homeowner will be given an additional 18 months to perform

further retrofits and have a second post-retrofit evaluation to be eligible for further incentives.

NRCan, in cooperation with the provincial partners, will be sending a letter to all homeowners who have

already had a D evaluation but whose 18 month deadline to apply for a grant has already expired to advise

them of this program change and opportunity. We will forward you a copy of this letter once it is

available.

Will extensions be permitted?

SOs will be allowed to grant extensions of up to 3 months under exceptional circumstances such as a

medical emergency, job loss, contractor disputes, etc… If you are uncertain whether an extension should

be provided, please contact your Account Manager for advice.

SOs will be required to keep a list of all homeowners who have been granted extensions including the

reason for the extension and must have this list available when requested by the Account Manager.

Certain mixed use buildings now qualify for participation– which ones?

For the purpose of the ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program, a mixed-use building is defined as a

building that is used for residential and non-residential purposes and has:

? no more than 3 storeys above grade;

? a footprint of 600 m2 or less;

? no more than 20 units;

? no more than 2 exterior entrances that provide access to all spaces; and

? at least 50 percent of the total floor area (which includes the basement) that is used as one or more

permanent residences.

In addition, all of the dwelling units and non-residential units, and at least 50% of the common areas,

must be accessible during the evaluation. Mixed-use buildings that contain commercial or industrial

equipment or systems that is not usually found in dwellings are excluded.

Examples Mixed-use Buildings that Would Qualify:

o Buildings that contain non-residential spaces without commercial or industrial equipment, such as

a clinic, a travel agency, a sewing shop, a bed and breakfast, a second hand shop, a bookstore or

an office.

Examples of Mixed-Use Buildings that Would Not Qualify:

o Buildings that contain non-residential spaces with commercial or industrial equipment, such as: a

restaurant with commercial stoves, refrigerators and freezers; a health food store or corner

grocery with commercial freezers/coolers; or a laundromat with commercial washers and dryers.

When mixed-use buildings are evaluated under ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes, it is important to note

that the results of the energy evaluation may not entirely reflect the building since they do not take into

consideration the energy use or internal heat gain associated with non-residential equipment and the

occupancy of spaces for non-residential use.
